Chemical oxidation - improvements with oxygen

Oxygen enrichment

Using pure oxygen or oxygen enriched air instead of air or other chemical oxidizing agents will have the following benefits:

I ncreased reaction rates

Yield improvements and reduced raw material consumption

Lower operating costs compared with chemical oxidizing agents

Reduced capital costs for new plants

Significantly reduced plant emissions

Process enhancements

One of BOC's recent developments for partial oxidation processes is PETROX (Process Enhancement Through Recycle with Oxygen). This patented technology can be used to upgrade existing processes, or designed into new production facilities. PETROX offers the following benefits to new or existing processes:

Improvements in product yield, capacity and operation

Reduced operating expenses and energy cost

Reduced overall environmental impact from lower emissions

Combustion processes

Pure oxygen improves productivity and saves on fuel costs in processes such as sulphuric acid regeneration and carbon black production. It is introduced by using air enrichment direct injection, or proprietary oxy-fuel burner technology. The use of oxygen in combustion processes brings the following benefits compared to conventional air systems:

Fuel cost savings

Energy conservation since less heat is carried up the stack

Reduction/control of pressure drops through a decrease in combustion gas volume

Biological processes

In aerobic fermentation, the supply of oxygen to microorganisms in an effective, controlled manner is very important. MOX-LINDE has direct experience in the application of pure oxygen to enhance the performance of fermentation systems producing single cell, filamentous or other types of organism.

Hydrocarbon separation enhanced recovery and reduced cost

MOX-LINDE uses the BOC patented PETROFIN (Process Enhancement Through Recovery of Olefins) separation technologies to recover C1 through C4 hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons, over a wide range of concentrations. PETROFIN offers the following benefits:

Enhanced olefin recovery leading to reduced feedstock and operating costs

Increased olefin concentration in the process loop

Ability to utilize lower purity olefin feedstocks

Increase in gas plant capacity and debottlenecking

Short payback time

The technology can be used to recover valuable hydrocarbons and to meet increasingly tough environmental regulations. The addition of PETROFIN to your process will help you overcome emission problems by reducing the need to flare tail gas streams and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

Nitrogen and carbon dioxide for safety and product qualityFrom the evaluation of the optimum gas supply method, through the specification of supply equipment and associated control systems, to the most effective way of using nitrogen to meet the needs of your process MOX-LINDE's expertise and experience are unsurpassed.

Reaction cooling

Manufacturers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are increasingly using low temperatures for the synthesis of intermediates and final products. Liquid nitrogen is a powerful, flexible and inert refrigerant, which can be used for direct or indirect heat exchange.

Blanketing and inerting

In the storage or processing of flammable liquids or powders, inert gas blanketing is the prime method of preventing fires and explosions. If the material is degraded by atmospheric oxygen or water, blanketing with oxygen-free, dry nitrogen gas will prevent the unwanted reactions.

Purging

Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are widely used to purge air, flammable vapours or other contaminants from storage tanks, pipelines, process equipment, railcars and ocean bound containers. High reliability, availability and low cost make nitrogen and carbon dioxide the gases of choice for customers in a wide range of industries.  For occasional purging operations that do not justify a permanent installation, or for purging large vessels, it is more effective to bring in liquid nitrogen storage and vapourisation equipment. MOX can offer advice on temporary installations and gas supplies to meet your needs.

Material Handling

Inert and available at high pressure, nitrogen is the natural choice for those whoh prefer to pressure transfer toxic, corrosive, viscous, high purity or sterile liquids or slurries rather than using pumps which may leak or cause contamination. Nitrogen is also the ideal medium in which to convey hazardous or degradable powders pneumatically.

Sparging

Nitrogen sparging is a practical method of decreasing the concentration of dissolved gas (usually oxygen) in a liquid by reducing its partial pressure through intimate contact between nitrogen and the liquid. The process can be batch or continuous in vessels, pipelines or packed columns. Sparging is viable for a variety of chemicals including liquid resins, varnishes, paints, and other liquids which oxidize quickly, for example, it prevents oxidation of stored flavours and fragrances and reactions between oxygen and acidic materials.

Hydrogen Applications

The chemicals industry is an important user of hydrogen and syngas for the production of bulk chemicals such as methanol and ammonia, speciality chemicals such as butanediol, HMDA, TDI and oxy-alcohols as well as other processes such as the hydrogenation of fats and oils.  MOX is a major supplier of hydrogen to the chemicals industry. We have hydrogen and distribution facilities around the country, and one hydrogen plant serving the chemical industry in the east coast, Gebeng.

Environmental problems innovative and economical solutions

KRYOCLEAN VOC recovery

Control of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become a priority for the management of air quality. The KRYOCLEAN system has been developed for the control and recovery of VOCs arising from chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The system is designed to handle the wide range of flows and changes in composition of the streams carrying the VOCs that are characteristic of the manufacturing processes, while delivering the highest standard of environmental performance. KRYOCLEAN is designed to meet current and future air quality standards.

Effluent treatment

MOX has many years experience in Malaysia in the biological treatment of a wide range of chemical effluents using its pure oxygen based technology. This technology can achieve higher biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates at lower cost than conventional air-based systems and it is more responsive to changes in load.  The use of our effluent treatment systems can bring you the following benefits:

Reduced power consumption

Reduced sludge make

Improved final effluent quality

Improved controllability

More compact systems

Whether your situation calls for a reduction in BOD, an increase in dissolved oxygen levels, a decrease in pH or chemical oxidation, MOX's engineers can help you design a safe and efficient system.
